Risk & Protection Profiles for Substance Abuse Prevention in WA State Communities

The DSHS Office of Research and Data Analysis just published Profile reports for the state, counties, and school districts.  Profiles provide annual trends for up to 12 years, covering nearly 50 indicators describe child and family health, availability of drugs and substance abuse, criminal justice involvement among teens and adults, academic performance of children and youth, and socioeconomic conditions in your community. The July 2017 release includes updated data on Alcohol Retail Licenses, Students Eligible for Free or Reduced Price Lunch, Victims of Child Abuse and Neglect in Accepted Referrals, Injury or Accident Hospitalizations for Children, and Injury or Accident Hospitalizations for Women. Other indicators will be updated in the December 2017 release.

2016 Results from the Monitoring the Future Survey of American Secondary School Students Available Online

Volume I reports and interprets trends over the past 42 years (from 1975-2016) in adolescent use of a host of licit and illicit substances, including newly emerging forms of substance use such as vaping. Volume I also reports trends in key attitudes, beliefs, age of initiation, exposure to use, and perceived availability.  It also has chapters on special topics, including long-term use of marijuana, sources of prescription drugs, and legal use of amphetamine and non-amphetamine stimulants for the treatment of ADHD.

An accompanying, second publication may also be of interest to you. This Occasional Paper 88 graphically charts trends in use for a host of substances through 2016 by many key demographic subgroups defined by gender, college plans, region, population density, SES, and race/ethnicity.

National Behavioral Health Barometer Now Available

SAMHSA is pleased to announce the release of the Behavioral Health Barometer, United States, Volume 4. Topics addressed in the report include substance use, serious mental illness, serious thoughts of suicide, and behavioral health treatment. The barometer uses data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health and the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services and presents findings by age, gender, racial and ethnic categories, poverty status, and health insurance status.
