U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, in partnership with state and local public health authorities and tobacco prevention professionals throughout the Pacific Northwest, will hold a Youth and Tobacco Town Hall Meeting on the Seattle campus of the University of Washington on Thursday, June 14, 2012.
Three of our nation's top health leaders will join us in Seattle to launch this important meeting. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin will discuss her recently released report, Preventing Tobacco Use Among Youth and Young Adults. Dr. Lawrence Deyton, Director, FDA Center for Tobacco Products, will discuss the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act and FDA’s action agenda for tobacco product regulation. Dr. Timothy McAfee, Director, CDC Office on Smoking and Health will discuss CDC’s work in this area, including its national campaign to reduce tobacco use and the HHS Tobacco Control Strategic Action Plan to End the Tobacco Epidemic.
The specific goals of our Youth Tobacco Town Hall are:
- To help spread the word about the Surgeon General’s Report, Preventing Tobacco Use among Youth and Young Adults
- To learn about new initiatives at the FDA to reduce the public health burden of tobacco products
- To increase the already-considerable regional energy around efforts to prevent tobacco initiation and reduce tobacco use among young people in the Pacific Northwest
- To provide an opportunity for advocates and experts working in this field to share experiences, solutions, and ideas for further reducing tobacco initiation and use among young people.
