CDPWS Honors an Icon: Mel Shulstad
Col. Lewis Melvin (Mel) Schulstad
was without a doubt a mover and a
shaker in the field of substance
abuse treatment. Mr. Schulstad's
contributions to the profession of
addictions treatment include two
significant books, Under the
Influence co-author (1984) and
Beyond the Influence (2000). A
recovering alcoholic with 46 years of
sobriety at the time of his death, he
continued to advocate for people
suffering from substance use
disorders throughout his retirement years. Dedicating his life to
promoting professionalism in the
field of alcoholism counseling, he
was co-founder and past president
of the National Association of
Alcoholism Counselors and Trainers
in 1974, which became the National
Association of Alcoholism Counselors
in 1976, and in 1982 the National
Association of Alcoholism and Drug
Abuse Counselors (NAADAC).
